World Arabic Language Day: The Language that Shapes UAE’s Identity

On 18th December each year, the world Arabic Language Day is celebrated to highlight the legacy and contribution of this language to humanity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 18th December World Arabic Day. Also, this is the day when the Arabic Language was proclaimed as the sixth official language of the United Nations in 1973. 

UNESCO’s World Arabic Language Day is commemorated to underscore the importance of this language and acknowledge its widespread role and historic and cultural significance. Known for its unique sound and religious and cultural significance, Arabic is one of the six official languages of the UN. 

Arabic language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world as more or less 450 million speak this language. Also, this is the official language of around 25 countries. It is mainly spoken in All Arabian countries. Furthermore, this language is also used in other Asian and African countries like Iran, Turkey, Mali, Cameroon, Chad, and Eritrea. Its alphabets are also used in many other popular languages such as Urdu and Persian.

This is deemed one of the ancient languages that is still used as a means of communication in many countries. The role of this language cannot be negated in Abrahamic religions that signify its role and contribution. Nowadays, efforts are being made to integrate this language into modern technology. This step will not only preserve this historical language but also promote it further.

Importance Of Arabic Language In The Context Of The UAE:

Arabic is not only the nation’s cultural identity but also the official language. It is also deemed a symbol of unity among people and connects the nation with other Arab nations as this language also serves as a bridge between Arabic countries. Furthermore, Arabic also reflects the UAE’s history and cultural richness and also preserves its national identity.

The United Arab Emirates also aims to promote the Arabic language. To further this cause, the nation has taken a number of initiatives such as the Arabic Language Charter, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Arabic eLearning project and the National Arabic Language Development Plan. These endeavors are intended to integrate the Arabic language into modern and globalized contexts and maintain the element of relevancy for youth.

In a bid to emphasize the significance of this language, the government of UAE also takes a keen interest in World Arabic Language Day celebrations to ensure that this language is relevant when it comes to today’s technological advancements. To commemorate this day, several initiatives are being considered such as digital campaigns, youth competitions, and cultural programs to inspire the youth and foster the integration of the Arabic language into the latest platforms.
